3-D TV Hidden Costs

It seems that televisions are now being packaged more like video game systems…at least when it comes to the new 3D models. No longer can you just buy a TV, plug it in and watch it. Oh no.
On the surface, 3D television is totally badass! Imagine watching everyday TV in 3D (those eTrade babies are gonna rock)! The sets themselves aren’t that much more than a regular flatscreen LCD set. You’ll probably pay a couple hundred more for the same size in 3D. But what you need to consider is the ad-ons you’ll need to purchase in order to enjoy the 3D picture.
- The set will run you about $2K for the smallest Samsung 40″ (full price set here)
- Then you’ll need a 3D Blue-Ray disc player…a couple hundred for a decent one
- Then each person that wants to actually watch will need special 3D glasses which will run about $150/pair
So, all-in you’re looking at a considerable purchase. Of course, Samsung (and probably its competitors) will offer a 3D starter kit which includes: 2 pairs of 3D glasses, a 3D Blue-Ray player and a 3D Blue-Ray disc (Monsters vs Aliens). And that kit will run you about $350. Starting to sound like an over priced video game setup no?
