Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s personal physician, was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter, due to his negligence in the administration of the anesthetic propofol, which led to Jackson’s death. He is being accused of acting “unlawfully and without malice.”
Dr. Murray claims he administered propofol to Jackson around 11am and then left to use the restroom. When he returned, he saw Jackson was not breathing and tried to revive him. However, an ambulance was not called until 12:21pm. Between the time he found Jackson unconscious and the time he called the ambulance, Murray made a series of personal phone calls, lasting 47 minutes.
The doctor’s mishandling of propofol went against warnings by The American Society of Anesthesiologists that doctors using propofol should be trained in its use, be present throughout sedation to monitor patients “without interruption,” and have rescue equipment “immediately available.”
Ed Chernoff, Murray’s lawyer, said, “We’ll make bail, we’ll plead not guilty and we’ll fight like hell.”
We’ll see about that.
