After a long battle with cancer, Merlin Olsen “one of the greats” dies at the age of 69.
The hall of famer was a member of the Los Angeles Rams “fearsome foursome” defensive line. Post football he embarked on a television journey staring in NFL broadcasts, commercials and as Jonathan Garvey on “Little House on the Prairie”".
“He cared deeply about people, especially those that shared the game of football with him,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. “Merlin was a larger-than-life person, literally and figuratively, and leaves an enormously positive legacy.”
“When you stop and think of Merlin on the field, he accomplished things that will never be accomplished again,” Youngblood (Olsen’s backup) said. “If it hadn’t been for Merlin Olsen, I wouldn’t have turned out to be the football player that he helped mold and make.”
The guy was a major influence in the lives of the people around him and will be missed.
