Scientology Losing Face

The Church of Scientology has been highly criticized by the medical field for claiming that mental illness doesn’t exist and that ailments can be cured through spiritual healing rather than modern medicine. But we’ve seen plenty of mental stability from followers like Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley. Um, yeah.
Ya know, there is a death metal band out there appropriately named “Death” whose latest album release is titled “Spiritual Healing”. This shot of their album cover accurately depicts the process of spiritual healing. Way to go Scientologists, jeez.
But that is of minor importance. What is of major importance is the recent activities surrounding the Church of Scientology on an international level. You may have heard that Oscar-winning film maker Paul Haggis quit the Church in a very open letter that was published online. Haggis had been reaching out to the Church’s national spokesman, Tommy Davis, for months imploring him to denounce the actions of The Church of Scientology of San Diego. The chapter publicly sponsored the anti-gay Proposition 8 (read more here). Said Mr. Haggis:
“As you know, for ten months now I have been writing to ask you to make a public statement denouncing the actions of the Church of Scientology of San Diego. […] I called and wrote and implored you, as the official spokesman of the church, to condemn their actions. I told you I could not, in good conscience, be a member of an organization where gay-bashing was tolerated.”
“The church’s refusal to denounce the actions of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly. I can think of no other word. Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent.”
Now in France, a Paris court has convicted The Church of Scientology of fraud. The verdict has been hailed as “historic” because it is the first time in France that the Church has been convicted of organized fraud. It seems that the Church’s French office, its library and six of its leaders pressured members into paying large sums of money for questionable financial gain and used commercial harassment against recruits. Way to go boys, or as the French might say…Voila! Use your pseudo-religious pretense to extort money and beat the economic crisis. How do you say assh@le in French?
