Remember that scene in Scrooged when Bill Murray plays his version of the promo for “Scrooge”?
“Acid Rain. Drug Addiction. International Terrorism. Freeway Killers.”
Checkit here:
Looking back at that wonderful Christmas movie, it would seem that Bill Murray was prophetic. Indeed our world is degrading all around us. There have been men, religious groups and even civilizations that have given mankind many doomsday predictions over the centuries. It seems that now, more than ever, we are taking these prophecies seriously. Even our cinema is recognizing our obsession with the end of the world…just look at the catalogue of work by director Roland Emmerich whose latest film, 2012, is about the Mayan Calendar doomsday predictions and how they are just around the corner from becoming reality!
However, if you’re a non-believer like myself, you can always take solice in the many many failed predictions that never came to pass. Our friends at Live Science have provided us with a list of the top 10 failed predictions. Some of which include:
- The “Global Icy Death” of May 5, 2000: Predicted by Richard Noone (obviously not from California)
- Y2K: duh
- Hale-Bopp and the end-of-the-world alien takeover: Predicted by Heaven’s Gate (who all committed suicide shortly after)
- And of course…the Mormon Armageddon of 1891: God told Joseph Smith about the end of the world (I guess God lied)
For a full list and details check out the full story here.
Or, for the only Doomsday that I can see (the end of John Cusack’s career), go check out the new movie 2012 in theatres November 13.
