85,000 Iraqis Killed

Posted on 14. Oct, 2009 by Chuck Rocker in News, Politics

Iraq ViolenceAccording to the latest report from the Human Rights Ministry, 85,694 people have been killed between 2004 and 2008.  That number ONLY counts:  Iraqi civilians, military and police.  It does NOT count:  U.S. military deaths, insurgents, foreigners, contractors or U.S. forces.

The Ministries report was released Tuesday as part of a larger study on human rights in the country.

“Through the terrorist attacks like explosions, assassinations, kidnappings and forced displacements, the outlawed groups have created these terrible figures which represent a big challenge for the rule of law and for the Iraqi people,” it said.

Violence is reportedly decreasing in Iraq but sadly, the massive death toll is far from over.  Although increasingly difficult to accurately track deaths, according to the report 2006 was the deadliest year with 32,622 killed or found dead.  The 2003 U.S. led invasion may have toppled the cruel and violent Hussein regime but has far from solved the problems that plague Iraq.
