President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran made an offer for “talks based on mutual respect and in a fair atmosphere” to the Obama administration today, but also attacked former President Bush saying he should be “tried and punished” for his actions in the Middle East. The announcement took place during televised address marking the 30th anniversary of the Islamic revolution in 1979. Since then, almost thirty years have been plagued with discord with the US and the region.
During his press conference on Monday night, President Obama he was looking to open a dialogue with Iran. “My expectation is, in the coming months, we will be looking for openings that can be created where we can start sitting across the table, face to face; of diplomatic overtures that will allow us to move our policy in a new direction.”
“The new U.S. administration has said that it wants change and it wants to hold talks with Iran,” Ahmadinejad said. “Our nation is ready to hold talks based on mutual respect and in a fair atmosphere.”
Ahmadinejad ‘s announcement comes after multiple, much publicized offers to talk from Washington. The United States has challenged Iran’s nuclear programs in the past; suspicious that the program is
being used for harmful and threatening nuclear weapons. It has also opposed Iran’s relationships with militant Islamic groups.
