In a major political move today, Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter has announced he will switch parties and run for reelection in November 2010 as a Democrat, pretty much following politician’s reputations as scheming, lying sleezebags.  The decision could huge effects on the Senate, because if re-elected, Specter becomes the 59th Democrat.  Which is just one Dem shy of giving the party the 60 that gives them filibuster-proof control over the Senate.  If Democrat Al Franken wins the Minnesota senate seat (an ongoing battle about votes that is currently in the court system) it will make make 60, giving the Dems the majority.

Specter was told Friday from his advisers that he pretty much had no chance of him winning the primary next spring as a republican against Pat Toomey.  So, after 28 years in the Senate, Specter said  ”I have found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican Party,” and he announced the decision last night at a dinner.  Anything to win it!
